Essential Hair Tips For Mothers Of Mixed Race Kids

Mixed race children can have hair that is a very different texture to both their parents.
Learning how to care for it properly can be a challenge when it is so different to your own
and can involve some trial and error. Here are some tips on how to care for mixed race hair.

These tips should be tested carefully until you find what works best for your child’s hair.

● Mixed hair may be prone to dryness, but it’s important to manage this in the right
way. Don’t try to add shine and moisture by overdoing oils and serums, which will
overload the hair with product.

● Treat the hair gently. When detangling, use a wide toothed comb and go slowly. A
good detangle will take a while.

● Add moisture to dry hair with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Apply a deep
conditioning treatment once a month to give the hair a boost of moisture.

● Protect the hair from snagging at night by asking the child to sleep wearing a sleep
cap. You can buy lots of very pretty or cool looking options online. Look for satin for a
comfortable cap that will protect the hair from damage.

● Minimise hair breakage by detangling and combing through the hair while a conditioner is
applied. After washing, apply a moisturising treatment to the hair to reduce friction
between the hair and the comb. Work slowly, in sections and start at the ends.

Don’t overwash the hair. How often is right will depend on the hair, but start with once
a week and experiment from there. You’re looking for the point between keeping the
hair clean without making it too dry from overwashing. It's likely that mixed hair will
need more/less frequent washing than your own hair.

Overwashing can make the hair dry and dull, whereas not washing enough can cause problems too. If your child swims or otherwise needs their hair washed more, try rinsing with
warm water and conditioning between washes instead and don't forget a swimcap.

● To dry, use a towel and blot the hair instead of rubbing to avoid breakage. After towel
drying, allow the hair to air dry for a while before turning to heat.

● Add more moisture by making sure your child drinks plenty of water. As well as
hydrating the body, plenty of water will hydrate the hair too, helping it to stay elastic.

● Don’t be afraid of adding moisture. This won’t make hair oily and will instead help it to
stay healthy. After washing, apply a conditioner to trap in moisture. Moisturise the
hair a couple of times a week with a dedicated product to help it to stay soft and healthy.
