Jamaican Black Castor Oil Overuse

Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO) is a product which I throughly recommend for softer, more manageable hair and fast hair growth. While using Jamaican Black Castor Oil I have experienced incredible growth during my hair journey and it has made my hair appear thicker and healthier

Your hair journey is a process and educating yourself about your hair is just as important as understanding the products you are using. Good hair habits, respecting your hair and regular use of JBCO will make your hair grow in time. There is no need to rush the process and apply it over liberally. Sticking to a good routine is a more effective way of taking care of your hair.

Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO) is known to cleanse toxins from the scalp, nourish and thicken the hair, stimulate hair growth, moisturise dry brittle hair, repair split ends, and give hair body and bounce.

It is not recommended that you leave 100% pure JBCO on your scalp as this can encourage rather than fight bacterial and fungal growth. JBCO contains phytonutrients that help destroy many types of bacteria, funghi and other parasites that can cause scalp and skin problems like dandruff. Applying the oil regularly has been known to encourage growth and start new growth. However as our sebaceous glands (in the scalp) also produce oil, a dirty scalp along with oil build up will clog up the pores and can actually cause skin and scalp problems.  If you do plan to leave JBCO on your scalp for an extended period of time, mix with a lighter oil, massage into your scalp and add adopt a good wash regime. Apply to a clean scalp.

If you do plan to leave JBCO on your scalp for more than 3 or 4 days without washing your hair try mixing it with another lighter oil like coconut or olive oil. In the past I have used Argan Oil or Jojoba Oil, that is until I discovered Fountain Jamaican Black Castor Oil Hair Food. The beautiful blend of oils, including jojoba oil, has smaller molecules which penetrate into the skin and scalp more readily. This can be left on the scalp to be absorbed. Fountain has really changed the game when it comes to JBCO. There is no need to worry about the oil being too thick or clogging pores. It is not sticky, messy, or smelly.

Our other favourite is the new range from Shea Moisture, lots of Jamaican Black Castor Oil infused products to choose from

Still not sure if Jamaican Black Castor Oil is for you, see our post:
Can Jamaican Black Castor Oil be Used on Caucasian or Asian Hair

Jamaican Black Castor Oil Uses:
  • Use Jamaican Black Castor Oil as a pre shampoo treatment. If using the pure 100%  JBCO  try mixing it with another lighter oil like coconut or olive oil.
  • Adding it to your deep conditioner as a moisturising agent.
  • Sealing in moisture on the ends, prevents the moisture leaving the hair easily after it has been applied. Moisturise the hair as usual. Rub a small amount into your hand and spread into your hair. Fountain JBCO is wonderful as a leave in as it has a refreshing odour and does not pong.
  • Protecting your ends pre relaxer is a good use of this moisturising oil. It helps prevent over processing as the oil coats the hair nicely. During the relaxer process it is washed off the hair.
  • Massage JBCO mixture into the scalp, edges or hair line three times a week

Hi All,
I have had a few emails about this post. Please do not be alarmed about using JBCO regularly. I only meant that if you are really globbing it on your head and expecting it to work overnight. Slow and steady!! You do have to use a reasonable amount though, and do this regularly. Make sure you wash your hair regularly if you are going to apply to the scalp. Dont glob it on over liberally and then not wash your hair for 4 weeks.

I currently have braids on and I just received my first bottle of the product. What would be your advice on how I should apply it because I do not wash my hair when it is in braids. Thank you

@Anonymous
Here are a couple of tips for use on braids or weave in:
1) Definitely don't use it everyday - perhaps use it once or at most twice a week.
2) Mix with a lighter oil like coconut or olive oil.
3) I would say wash your hair every two weeks but you said you dont like to do this. If you do wash ensure that the hair is properly dried as leaving water in could cause mould to grow.
4) A little goes a long way. You only need use a little of your oil mixture on the roots.
5) Use an applicator bottle to get a small amount to the roots
6) Wash hands after use. JBCO is for external use only and can be an extremely powerful laxative.

Depending on how long you keep the braids in I would say watch out for itchy scalp, regardless of what oil or product you use on it. A dirty scalp can cause problems later on when you remove the braids. I say this from personal experience.

Fountain Jamaican Black Castor Oil Hair Food can be left on the scalp for a longer period of time than pure 100% JBCO. It only contain 100% natural oils.

Overusing Jamaican Black Castor Oil can lead to buildup and scalp irritation. It's essential to balance usage for optimal results. PGCE Assignment Writers recommend moderation, just like managing academic workloads effectively.
