Battle of the Black Oils

Battle of the Black Oils

Using a natural oil as a part of your regular hair care regime is especially important when you have natural Afro hair. Jamaican Black castor oil and Black Seed are considered by many in the natural hair community to be two of the best oils to use when maintaining your natural tresses, but in the Battle of the Black Oils who will reign supreme? What are the benefits of using each one and exactly how are they different? Let’s have a look at these two natural oils and see how using them can help encourage healthy natural hair growth.

Jamaican Black Castor Oil
Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO) has a large and loyal following of users who continue to rave about its benefits for naturally curly hair. It is made from the same castor plant seeds that are used to make regular castor oil, but the difference comes from the way it is processed. While regular castor oil is made from simply pressing the castor seeds, to make JBCO the seeds are roasted first and then pressed. This process creates a little amount of ash and the alkalinity of this ash helps to open up your hair cuticles, which in turn encourages the oil to seep into the scalp and get to work. Jamaican Black Castor Oil is suitable for all hair types and people who use it will find that it:
  • Moisturizes brittle hair
  • Thickens and strengthens hair (including eyebrows by the way)
  • Simulates hair growth
  • Fights dry and itchy scalp conditions including eczema
  • Prevents dandruff
  • Helps to replenish thinning hair and bald spots
  • Repairs split ends
  • Gives hair body and a nice bounce
As mentioned in the post Jamaican Black Castor Oil OverUse, be careful not to overuse JBCO as it will be counterproductive. Otherwise, it clearly has many benefits that can help your natural hair to be healthy and strong.

Black Seed Oil aka Black Cumin Oil
This oil is mined from the Nigella Sativa Plant seeds and has many different names, two of the most recognised being Black Seed Oil and Black Cumin Oil. Whatever you choose to call it, there is no denying that this oil is packed with essential nutrients, carbohydrates, and plant fats, all of which hold benefits for your hair. When it comes to your natural hair, using black seed oil will:

  • Help balding or thinning hair to regrow
  • Fight against some fungal infections that cause hair loss
  • Protect hair from getting damaged
  • Prevent some types of hair loss
  • Repair hair that was damaged by colouring or styling

Black seed oil is also well known for being an elixir that will fight all manner of diseases and illnesses including some that are considered to be ‘incurable’ like HIV and Cancer. The hair benefits listed above are just the tip on the iceberg of what this incredible oil has to offer.

Who Wins the Battle?
So which oil reigns supreme in the Battle of the Black Oils? Personally, I would give the tile to black seed oil because, well, how can you beat being able to cure disease? You may prefer JBCO for different reasons. If you are only concerned with hair care then JBCO may be all that you need to achieve your hair goals but if you are taking a more holistic approach, black seed oil can benefit your entire body. In the end it comes down to your personal preference as you will definitely benefit from using both.
