Babe Power by Missguided: Product Review

Babe Power is one of the UK's Best Selling Perfumes of 2017 (sold out within three hours of its release) and a 2017 Boots Beauty Awards Gold Winner, The Telegraph calling it "The £25 fragrance that is outselling Dior and Paco Rabanne"

After passing through duty free a few times over the last few months I tried to get hold of my usual perfume and was unsuccessful finding it. This Christmas I was given the Misguided Babe Power perfume to try. At first glance at the box I am guessing this was designed with Millennials in mind. It is shaped like a can of soft drink so a little unusual compared to what I would normally buy.

I did however love the rose gold colour of the bottle/can and the metallic writing on the box which screamed luxury at me.

Babe Power by Missguided: Product Review

I then proceeded to spray this in the air in front of me and walk into the lingering mist. At which point my husband walked in and said: "Wow, is that a new perfume, smells amazing in here"

Mission Accomplished! New perfume found.

So here is what Misguided says about this fragrance:

For fierce babes who need to slay all day

Top Notes:  grapefruit zest, sour cherry, pink pepper, crisp apple, pineapple and rhubarb
Heart Notes: orange blossom, peony and jasmine
Base Notes: vanilla, candy floss, sensual musk, amber crystals

I haven't liked a fragrance this much in a long time, so much so I had to blog about it immediately. Its a great scent that I instantly liked and so did my husband and so many people I encountered over the holidays. I really liked that it wasn't a light flowery scent or something too sweet which would not appeal to me. More like a sweet fruit musk but so much more than that, you can detect  quite a few different scents making it a complex smell that is hard to ignore

Looking for a new scent why not give this a try

Product Review: Mixed Chicks Kids

Being the mother of two mixed race children, products like Mixed Chicks were the first to catch my eye when I started looking for for products to style their hair.  I previously talked about handling my children's hair (in Coping with Mixed Children's Hair) mainly because the texture is so very different to mine and to each others.

Ruby and Sebastian have completely different textures to each other. Sebastian's hair is wavy and curly in points and is quite dry. Recently Sebastian has wanted to grow his hair longer, which requires more care. Ruby on the other hand has wavy hair and slightly more oily. As I mentioned before I wash her hair two to three times weekly whereas Sebastian's is done once or twice weekly. The main reason for washing their hair so often is our swimming routine. It was this that brought me to the mixed chicks range in the first place. We hadn't used this range for a while and the kids hair had changed quite a bit in the last 4 years.

Mixed Chicks Kids Shampoo 5/5
Blurb: A gentle natural safe shampoo for our kids. Now you can wash tender scalps without fuss. Great for little swimmers to use daily. Tear free and no sulfates.

My 2p:  This is definitely our favourite of all the products. We use this particularly because of having to wash this kids hair so often  due to swimming. It doesn't dry out their hair and I feel confident that the chlorine is being washed out properly as it contains citric acid.

Mixed Chicks Kids Conditioner 5/5
Blurb: Alcohol, fragrance, colourless and paraben free, with no harsh chemicals.
My 2p: Perfect for kids, with no harsh chemical, worked really well for my kids hair.

Mixed Chicks Kids Leave In Conditioner 3/5
My 2p: All  the products worked wonders in the kids hair particularly taking away that dryness of Sebastian's hair. The leave in conditioner was however the kids least favoutite, mostly for Ruby as she found it very sticky in her fine hair. Worked OK for Sebastian but as he needs lots of moisture it wasn't the best thing we've tried in his hair. However, I quite liked the leave in for my kinky texture so I think it would better for thicker textures.

Hands down the kids shampoo from this range is our favourite and gets 5 out of 5, overall the whole range gets 4 out of 5 from the kids as they did not like the stickiness of the leave in conditioner.

I've had the pleasure of meeting these lovely ladies and can genuinely say that they take pride in their brand and I cant wait to see what they come up with next.

Protecting your Hair from the Summer Heat

Protecting your Hair from the Summer Heat

Summer is all about fun in the sun. A lot of people worry so much about exposing their skin to the harsh summer sun and heat but tend to forget the effect of the same elements on the hair. As a matter of fact, exposing your hair to too much summer heat can take its toll on your strands. As a result, you will have to deal with tired, dry and brittle hair that will take so much time to get back to normal.

But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Here are 4 ways that will help you take care of your hair and protect it from the summer heat.

Use SPF Protection

SPF protection is not just for your skin. There are some good products that will have SPF protection and will protect your hair during the hot summer mornings. Using a good leave in conditioner with SPF protection will keep your hair moisturized and will protect it against the effect of the UV rays. If you are planning on getting your hair wet, then you may want to use a water proof product. If you can’t find a good water proof product with SPF protection, then it is advised to slather on a generous amount of a thick rich product before you hit the waves.

Avoid Too Much Heat

You may find that your hair starts to turn limp and lifeless in the summer. This is because the summer heat will rip your hair of its bounce and life. Avoiding using extra heat from the blow dryer or curling irons is a good decision for so many reasons. For starters, summer is all about hitting the water and relaxing in the sun. Using heat to style your hair is not really practical as the humidity will ruin everything you have worked for in a matter of minutes or hours. At the same time, the summer heat will cause your hair to be dry and brittle. Adding more heat will just increase the amount of damage to your precious strands. Try to let your hair air dry as much as possible and style it in more natural ways.

Wear a Hat or Cap:

A hat will not just protect your face against the harmful UV rays but will also keep your hair sheltered. The summer heat and the sun rays will dry your hair and subject it to a lot of damage. If you are planning to sit in the sun, it is a good advice to wear a nice big hat that will look stylish and chic. Wear a swimming cap if you are planning to spend some time in the pool as the combination of sun rays and chlorine can be fatal.

Stay Hydrated

While you are trying to protect your hair from the outside, it is very important not to forget how to protect it from the inside. If you are not drinking enough water or juice, you will not be doing anything to protect your hair. Make sure that you are having enough fluids and don’t forget your fruit and vegetables as they will provide your hair with the natural vitamins and minerals it needs to stay healthy.

How to Detangle Your Natural Hair without Breakage

Guest Post: How to Detangle Your Natural Hair without Breakage

If you want to have long, healthy tresses, you should master how to detangle your hair without breakage. Maybe you’re looking to add length, or you’re just interested in getting fuller, healthier hair. Learning how to detangle will be one of the most important steps in your natural hair care regimen.

Many black women believe their hair doesn’t grow as fast as straight hair. But African-American hair grows at an average rate of ¼ of an inch per month—the same as everyone else’s. The difference is that our tight coils cling together, and they can tangle and mat within minutes. Tangling is when the damage happens. Plus, having tiny coils makes it difficult for your scalp’s natural oils to coat the hair strand, resulting in even more potential breakage. It’s this damage that causes natural queens to struggle to retain growth.

The faster you can figure out how to keep your growth, the quicker you’ll be able to show off your long, natural curls. Moisturization and having a reliable detangling process will be the keys to getting undamaged, beautiful tresses.

In this post, you’ll find easy tips to detangle your hair without breakage. Keep reading if you want to know how to retain length and keep your curls healthy and luscious.

When Should You Detangle Your Hair?

The best time to detangle your hair is on wash day, during your conditioning stage in the shower. Water is the most hydrating substance on the planet, and it helps natural hair become softer and more pliable while you’re detangling.

Straggly ends and hair fairies make the detangling process more difficult because they cling onto healthy strands and snag them. Aim to get rid of shedding hair right before you wash your hair by using your hands to gently finger detangle. It will help shorten the time in the shower and make your hair easier to detangle.

Use a moisturizing conditioner with good slip to loosen tangles. Slip is beauty terminology that refers to how slippery a product is. If you’re natural, you’ll want products with good slip so that your curls can slide apart better. Two natural ingredients that give good slip are marshmallow and slippery elm. You can buy these herbs and add them to your conditioners, or you can look for products already containing them.

Use the Right Detangle Tools and Products

Using the right tools and products is crucial to mastering the detangling process. Narrow-toothed combs wreak havoc on natural hair because the tiny coils become caught and damaged. Many naturals swear by the Denman brush and wide-toothed combs, but they are not for everybody. If you find yourself with a handful of hair you have to throw away after you comb, you may want to reexamine your tool.

Often, your fingers are one of the best detangling tools because they can feel actual tangles and sense tough knots. Be sure to focus on the ends while you detangle, and never tear hair apart. Single strand knots should be cut with a quality pair of scissors.

Everyone’s hair is different, so you’ll have to decide whether you should use your fingers, the Denman brush, or a wide-toothed comb. A moisturizing conditioner can double as a detangler if it has good slip. Slip will help you slide curls apart, and will speed the entire process. It’s easiest if you part your hair into four sections and detangle while you’re still in the shower. If it’s not wash day, and you only need to refresh your curls, try using a water spray, a leave-in conditioner, and an oil of your choice.  Keeping your hair in four sections will keep the hair untangled as you move from the detangling phase to the other steps in the LOC method

Protective Styles and Satin Bonnets

The best way to speed your detangling process is not to get your hair overly tangled in the first place. Wearing a style that doesn’t require a lot of maintenance may be one of the best things you’ll ever do for your curls.

Wash and go’s sound fantastic in theory because they cut down on time spent setting the hair. However, they might not work well for kinky hair. 4b and 4c curl patterns experience shrinkage and tangles faster than the other hair types. A wash and go, or even a cute afro may mean more dryness, tangles, and matted hair by the end of the day. You may be left with dry, brittle hair when you go to detangle, and this could cause damage.

Doing a natural hair up do like the roll, pin, tuck style, or cornrows underneath a wig or extensions will work wonders to keep your hair from tangling and will make wash day much easier.

Wearing a satin bonnet or scarf at night will help keep your hair untangled, and it will guard against friction caused by a pillowcase. Cotton can be drying to the hair and can cause hair to weaken and mat. You may not find little ringlets on your pillowcase in the morning, but you may notice them in the shower on wash day.

Moisture Goes a Long Way in the Detangle Process
Curly hair thrives on moisture. Moisturizing your hair well on wash day and during the week with a product like Kinky Curly Knot Today, will help you manage your natural hair. If it’s the middle of the week and you don’t want to wet your hair, you can dampen it with a water spray bottle to add moisture. The shower or water spray is also known as the liquid step in the LOC method. You should couple this step with a moisturizing conditioner or detangling product. Then, follow the liquid step with oils to seal the moisture to the strand. High nutrient oils, like avocado, coconut, Black Jamaican Castor, and jojoba will help strengthen and protect your hair.

The last step in the LOC technique is to use a curling cream, leave-in conditioner, or shea butter to coat the hair strand and lock in moisture. Layering products, as suggested in the LOC method, will be one of the best ways to keep your hair hydrated and less tangled during the week. If you find your hair becoming too dry and difficult to detangle, it’s probably time for a deep conditioner. It’s easy to boost your store-bought deep conditioner by mixing in a few oils. Coconut, jojoba, avocado, peppermint, and eucalyptus will all add nutrients and slip to your jar.

The detangling process is a vital part of the natural hair regimen. Being able to pull apart knots with ease is the key to retaining growth and having healthy, beautiful curls. Do you have a unique detangling process? What are some ways you’ve detangled your natural hair without breakage?

Anti-Frizz Options for the Most Humid Days

Anti-Frizz Options for the Most Humid Days

Frizz is the number enemy for your curly hair. When humidity and frizz combine together they can get any hair out of control. But fortunately there are a lot of options available to keep your strands in place even on the most humid days.

Don’t Over Use the Shampoo:

Humidity can push you to shampoo your hair more than you should. This will strip your hair off its natural oils and will make it dry and frizzy. You can use a little bit of shampoo only at the roots of your hair once a week or opt for co-washing which will help keep your hair moisturized. Over time, your hair will get used to the new routine and it will feel softer and healthier.

Use a T-shirt to Dry your Hair:

A good way to keep your hair frizz free is to use a cotton T-shirt to soak up the moisture after the shower. Rubbing and scrubbing your hair using a towel can add too much static electricity to your hair and will raise the cuticle which in turn will add frizziness to your hair. Just scrunch your hair using an old cotton T-shirt to squeeze your strands until they are almost damp and then let it air dry.

Use the Right Hairstyle:

There are some nice hairstyles that will work to keep your hair in check. Try to keep your hair up as much as possible as this will help you keep the flyaways in check and your hair under control. Wear your hair in a high pony tail or a messy bun and use natural oil or your homemade gel to keep the baby hair in check.

Use Shea Butter:

Curly and wavy hair is prone to frizz and flyaways and this is why you need to make sure that you are using the most appropriate products to keep your hair in check. Shea butter is great to keep your wavy and curly hair in place. Using Shea butter on wet hair will also help lock in the moisture after the shower. A little bit goes a long way and will help nourish your chemically treated and bleached hair.

Use Flaxseed Gel:

You don’t have to use tons of products on your curly or wavy hair to keep it in place. Styling and defining products are packed with chemicals that will harm your hair. It is a good idea to opt for natural products whenever it is possible to keep your hair healthy and still have a stylish look. You can make your own gel that is 100% natural and free from chemicals using flaxseeds. Just add 4 tablespoons of flaxseeds to 2 glasses of water and stir on medium heat until it boils. Turn off the heat when a white frost starts to form at the top of the mixture. Let it cool and then keep it in the fridge. This gel is great to keep your hair in place and will not dry your strands like commercial products.

Fresh and Funky natural hairstyles for the summer

Fresh and Funky natural hairstyles for the summer

Summer is all about letting yourself go. Whether you are planning to spend your day on the beach or stuck in the office, you still want easy and hassle free styles to keep your hair in check. Taming and straightening treatments are not for everyone. Of course they give you a more manageable look for your curly or frizzy hair but they change the nature of your hair forever. Plus who wants to spend half an hour on straightening and blow-drying their hair which will scrunch up once it hits the humidity outside (sigh). The answer is to let your curls and waves be. Don’t change their nature, instead them let change you! Since we are not really into chemicals and we love to embrace our natural beauty, we’ve come up with a few hair styles that will help you have a fresh looking stylish hair every day.
These styles take less than a few minutes to be put up together. Using a few products and tools, you’ll be good to go:

  1. The sky-high pony tail:
Suitable for: short and medium length hair.
What you will need: An anti-frizz serum or styling gel- a scrunchie or elastic- a few bobby pins- hair spray.

How to do it:
The sky-high pony tail is a great hairstyle that your curly hair will just love. You can definitely use it to keep your curls in check for a wonderful second day look but it is also good on the go especially in hot and humid weather.
  1. All you have to do is to bend all the way forward and gather your hair from the back. Use a comb to pick up your hair from the back of your hair until you gather it in a very high pony tail at the crown of your head.
  2. Don’t comb the pony tail itself so that you don’t mess up with your curls. You can keep the pony tail wherever you want and the height will determine how your curls will flow.
  3. Now take all your hair in a scrunchie and tight it so that your curls will flow from the sides like a fountain. Use some bobby pins to keep the elastic or scrunchie lifted and in place.
  4. Use the anti-frizz serum to tame those unruly baby hairs on the sides and at the back or take a pea sized squeeze of your gel and comb any unmanageable hair.
  5. You can use bobby pins to secure those free spirit hairs. Now use your fingers to separate your curls and then spray your hair to set it.

  1. The messy bun:
Suitable for: All hair lengths
What you will need: styling gel or mousse- bobby pins- bow tie or flower (optional).
How to do it:
Styling your hair has never been easier. The messy bun can turn your hair from “What?” to “Wow!” in just a few seconds.
  1. All you have to do is to gather your hair using a brush without combing through your curls at the ends.
  2. Now use a shoelace, strip of nylon or full circle headband to pull the hair up from the front and back all the way to the middle.
  3. Use the styling gel or mousse to take care of those stray hairs on the back of your head and at the front.
  4. You can attach a flower or a bowtie under your messy bun to give your hair a fresher look.
  5. Want to have a funkier look? Why not start by separating your hair into equal parts and secure it into two high messy buns? They don’t have to be identical and you can let a few curls fly at the front as well.

  1. The twist:
Suitable for: All hair lengths
What you will need: bobby pins- curls enhancing product (optional) - wash-out color (optional)
You know how your curls and waves will look different if you take a look at them from different angles. This hair style is great for a night after a beach day, a day in the office or even a wedding when the front part of your hair is going out of control.
  1. You can start by damping your hair and massaging a little amount of any curls enhancing product. Just scrunch your hair if you feel that your curls are lying a bit flat or start with a fresh curly hair.
  2. Take a section from one side of your hair and twist it towards the back in an upward motion. Leave a few curly strands at the front for a fresher look.
  3. Secure the twist at the back of your head using some bobby pins or kirby grips.
  4. Now repeat the process on the other side of your head.
  5. Let the back of your hair out.
  6. For a more summerish look you can use a wash-out hair colour on the hair you are going to twist. You can also use a thin strand of glitter fabric to twist with your hair.

You don’t have to waste one hair a day to take care of your curly hair every single day. Just use the right tools and set your inner curly diva free.

How to have the best beach hair

How to have the best beach hair

Heading to the beach? It is time to enjoy yourself, you’ve definitely earned it but….your curly and wavy hair might not be as happy about spending a day at the beach. Usually it is all fun and games until the humidity hits your hair hard. All of a sudden, your curls are all over the place and you are trying to keep them in check until this sucks the fun out of your vacation. Women like to have their cake and eat it too and this means that we like to splash in the water, relax in the sun but still have that shiny hair that looks like we’ve just come out of the salon. But don’t worry. We’ve got your back. Here are some of the best tips that will help you have incredible beach hair:

Protect your hair from the sun:

Do you apply sunblock generously to protect your skin? You should know that the sun rays can damage your hair big time. When you are at the beach you should try to protect your hair and face by wearing a hat. Not only you will be keeping the UV rays at bay but you will also look stylish. Prevention is easier than fixing the damage.

Use the nature for your benefit:

While you are on the beach you will have more time to take care of your hair. So if you are in for some sun tan, then why not use the heat from the sun for your benefit? Here is a trick: Apply a generous amount of a nourishing hair mask and cover your hair in a plastic wrap or just let it. Now put your hat on and nobody will know what it is going on beneath. The heat from the sun will work in the same way heaters work at the salon to make your treatment work.

Don’t forget your oil:

Oils are thick and this means that you can use them to create a barrier to protect your hair. The sea water can be very dehydrating to your hair and will make it rather frizzy and dry. Don’t get me started on chlorine which damages your hair to a great extent, even messing up with your hair colour. Adding a generous amount of hair oil will create a film around your hair strands which the water will not be able to penetrate.

Use the right accessories:

Using the right accessories will help you look great on the beach and out of the water. You can use different accessories to style your hair and look great all the time. A hair band will keep the front of your hair in check for the rest of your curls to fly freely. You can also style your hair in a high pony tail or a messy bun that will not get so wet if you are not into going under the water. Separate your hair into 2 sections then put one down in the form of a bun and let the other one free using an elastic or a scunchie. Don’t worry about your curls flying because this is what the beach is all about.

The Best Way to Manage Your Curls

The Best Way to Manage Your Curls
If you have curly hair then you know that the struggle is real. Curly hair can be a blessing and a nightmare depending on how you manage it. You definitely love your curly hair and love the good hair days but there are some days when you just feel that wish you could find a magic solution to manage your curls.
There is nothing magic about taking care of your curly hair. The answer is in consistency. Taking care of your curly hair for 3 or 4 weeks in a row will have a great impact on how your curls look and feel. Here are some easy tips that will help you manage your curls for the best looking hair every single day:

1. Get the right hair cut:
The length of your hair will have a great impact on how your curls look. Long hair will weigh your curls down and make them less prominent. For this reason a lot of people like to keep their curly hair at shoulder length or a little bit longer. If you like to let your curls fly freely then go for a shorter length.

2. Take care of your ends:
Having split ends will make your curls look ugly. Make sure that you take care of your hair from the inside by eating healthy food and taking your supplements. After a few weeks you will see that your curls are healthy and bouncy. Split ends should be cut every 2 months to make sure that your hair looks healthy and live.

3. Try co washing:
This means giving up shampooing altogether and conditioning hair instead. If your hair is dry then using shampoo will remove more of the oils that help to make your curls healthy and bouncy. Instead, you can opt for using only your conditioner to keep your hair healthy and shiny. By time your scalp will get used to the absence of shampoo and the oil production will be controlled. Apply an adequate amount of conditioner at the tips of your hair and massage your way up. Applying too much conditioner on your scalp can cause dandruff.

4. Dry properly:
Instead of rubbing your hair until it dries with a towel, use an old t-shirt to absorb the moisture instead. The cotton t-shirt will absorb the wetness and help dry your hair without adding unnecessary static electricity or creating knots.

5. Don’t brush your hair:
Brushing your hair will remove the curls and will make your hair look frizzy and unmanageable. Instead opt for a wide tooth comb to comb your hair while it is still wet. Always start by combing your hair from the bottom and go up to remove all knots. Once it is dry, don’t try to comb your hair because it will damage your curls.

These tips will help you take care of your curly hair and will keep it in great condition. Follow them for a few weeks and your curly hair will thank you later.

How to sleep with curly hair

How to sleep with curly hair

You have probably fought sleep for a few good hours because you didn’t want to sleep in order to wake up with messed up flat hair. Your curls are just too good to be ruined, right? Sleeping can damage and ruin the look of your curls, that’s for sure. But there is a way, other than staying up all night to help take care of your curls so that you can have good second day curls. Putting in that extra effort before you go to bed will result in happier, bouncer and less frizzy curls on the next morning.

Style your hair before you go to sleep:
Yes you read that right! You need to style your hair properly if you want to have defined curls on the next morning. Start by damping your hair a little bit then add some setting product to ensure that your curls will stay in place. Bantu knots will help you get defined tight curls. Use a comb to divide your hair into sections then tie each one of them into a knot. The smaller the sections, the tighter the curls. Secure the knot with a bobby pin wear a silk or satin bonnet to keep your knots in place. If you are looking for a less drastic look with wide wavy curls, then style your hair in braids. The number and width of the braids will determine how tight your curls will look the next day.

Use the right tools:
Of course you can use bobby pins to secure your curls in place but you can also use flexi rods. They are super easy to use and you can easily control how tight your curls look the next morning. Wet your hair and add some styling mousse or curls defining product then wrap a section of your hair on a rod and tie it up in a “U” shape. The bigger the hair strand, the wider the curls will be. In the morning you can just untie your hair and let your curls flow.

Use the right products:
Not only should you use the right kind of products but you should also pay attention to the amount you are applying. Mousse will help you maintain your curls but using too much product can dry your hair or weigh it down. Make sure that you are using an anti-frizz product that will help your curls look healthy and live.

Sleep right:
No, you don’t have to sleep like Ancient Egyptian women who used to rest their necks on wooden holders to maintain their hair styles. It is so much easier and smoother for you. Sleep on satin or silk pillow cases to prevent friction. When your hair gets in contact with the cotton in your pillow case, there will be unnecessary static electricity that will make your hair less manageable and frizzy. A satin or silk bonnet is another option if you don’t have a satin pillow case. Your hair will just glide smoothly.

Sleeping with your curly hair is not so hard. Just invest in the right products and spend those extra few minutes before you sleep. Enjoy the amazing looking curls every single day.

Along with a host of great brands for natural hair curated from around the world.

Find out more about Marjani Below.

Marjani Beauty Company is a beauty and cosmetics retailer for women of colour with a curated selection of beauty products from across the globe. This company was borne from the desire of our founders to create a space and platform where the collective diversity of women of colour is celebrated. There is no one size fits all when it comes to women of colour’s hair, skin and cosmetic needs. As women of colour, we are constantly breaking the mirrored vanity when it comes to the “ideal standards” of beauty. All the while, mass market brands fail to keep up or even attempt to fulfil our diverse needs.

At Marjani Beauty, women of colour can feel confident that every product was made or each service was created with their specific beauty needs in mind. We begin our curation process with brand partnership identification. By only working with brands around the globe that mirror our passion for enhancing the beauty of women of colour, we ensure that each product featured or tip given has our members’ specific needs in mind. We will only partner with brands across the globe that are independently owned or owned by persons of colour.

We want to inspire women of colour to accept and embrace their diversity, redefine traditional standards of beauty and connect women of colour across the world creating a global network.

The Marjani Mission
To create a retail experience for women of colour where beauty and cosmetic products are accessible to all, no matter the shade, hair texture, age, nationality or geographical location.
To build a community composed of members with a shared passion and respect for the wide spectrum of beauty of women of colour.
To partner with brands that highlight the diversity amongst women of color and develop products specific to their needs.
To form a global beauty ecosystem for women of color by linking the buying power of local consumers to international brands.

The Marjani Vision
To be the leading global cosmetics and beauty company with curated products and accessible services for women of colour. One Who is Beautiful Like Precious Coral.
